Summer Competition

Southern Athletic Club members participate in Athletics SA and SA Athletic League competitions during the summer.

The main Athletics SA summer track and field competition is the Interclub competition – a series of regular meets held at Santos on a Saturday from October to March. The Interclub competition is suitable for participants of all ages and abilities, as the competition is seeded, meaning participants compete against others of similar ability. Participants compete individually in as many events disciplines as they like and accumulate points for their clubs based on their performances. Points accumulate across the course of the season and at the conclusion of the Interclub competition, clubs are awarded pennants in a number of age and gender categories.

Athletics SA also organise state championship events as well as a number of schools and “all comer” meets at the SA Athletics Stadium, Mile End,  throughout the summer.  Masters athletes (aged 30 and older) can also compete at the SA Masters Athletics track and field meets held at SA Athletics Stadium every Wednesday evening.

The South Australian Athletic League runs a series of track race meets where athletes compete from handicap starting marks, depending upon their ability. The winner of each event receives a sash and prizemoney is presented to the winner and placegetters. The highlight of the SAAL racing season is the Bay Sheffield Carnival held at Colley Reserve, Glenelg between Christmas and New Year.
